Ayr racecourse is situated in Scotland making it the only grade 1 anywhere in Scotland. The track is known for National Hunt racing as well as Flat being active throughout the year. The course hosts big events including the Ayr Gold Cup Festival and the Scottish Grand National. Ayr opened up in 1576 but the first race meeting wasn’t until 1771. Today it holds the biggest prize money in the National Hunt race calendar with the Ayr Festival.

Even though it took so long for the first official race meeting to take place. Ayr is still known as the heart of horse racing in Scotland. Whilst Red Rum is renowned for the Grand National, he also won twice in the Scottish National and won both in 1974.

The Scottish National spans four miles and half a furlong consisting of 27 fences. This enduring course isn’t the standard layout though. The flat racing course is 6 furlongs on the straight and a left handed bend being twelve furlongs long.

The Ayr Gold Cup comes around every September with the headline race being a distance of 6 furlongs. The race consists of 27 horses with highest weighted horses who enter the race. The Scottish Grand National comes around every April since 1966 which is another highlight on the UK race calendar.

Ayr race is rarely heavy going due to the drainage being so good. The effectiveness of the drainage means it makes your selections a bit easier when betting by looking at previous race form.
